Matt Ford at joint enterprise protest

Monday, 12 July 2021

Last week our reseach analyst Matt Ford attended the campaign organisation JENGbA's demonstration against the joint enterprise doctrine in Parliament Square.

JENGbA campaigners marched from Victoria station to the House of Commons to demand the release of their families and friends imprisoned using joint enterprise.

Joint enterprise is the name for a set of legal principles that allows for multiple individuals to be prosecuted and convicted, without taking into account their differing roles or even whether they were present at the scene of the crime.

There were a number of speakers at the demo, including supportive politicians David Lammy and Andrew Mitchell.

The Centre is carrying out a project about the impacts of a key Supreme Court ruling which found particular aspects of the doctrine had been misinterpreted for over 30 years. You can find out more about the project here
