Politicians' speeches can be disappointing affairs. Eye-catching initiatives are trailed in advance and major announcements promised. In delivery they can savour of anticlimax, offering little more than a predictable hodge-podge of re-announced policy and easy political posturing.
UK Justice Policy Review
The next steps in the privatisation of prisons in England and Wales were announced today by the Ministry of Justice.
Competition to run four prisons will go forward to the next stage. These are:
- HMP Northumberland (an amalgam of HMPs Castington and Acklington).
- HMP Moorland.
- HMP Hatfield.
- HMP Lindholme.
The three remaining bidders in the frame for these are Sodexo, Serco and MTC/Amey.
Contrary to complaints from some high profile figures, the police have done well out of the spending review, Richard Garside argues.
