Nick Hardwick, the Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, took to Twitter today to announce that he wouldn't be reapplying for his job.
Nick Hardwick: Told MoJ ministers & officials I won't be reapplying for my post. Cant be independent of people you are asking for a job.— HMI Prisons (@HMIPrisonsnews) December 2, 2014
HIs Tweet came in reaction to a statement by Justice Secretary Chris Grayling that Mr Hardwick would not automatically be reappointed.
Questioned by Labour MP John McDonnell, during a hearing of the House of Commons Justice Committee, Mr Grayling confirmed that Mr Hardwick's post would be readvertised. Mr Hardwick, he said, was 'perfectly open to apply for it '.
