A better future

Friday, 9 July 2021

At the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, we believe that there is always a better use for a piece of land than as a place for a prison.

That is why, as we emerge from lockdown, we are building a movement for change. It is time for a serious conversation about the land our prisons occupy, and for action to put that land to better use.

Can you help us build this movement?

There are more than one hundred prisons across the United Kingdom. Some, like Brixton prison in London, have occupied the land for more than 200 years. Others, like Berwyn prison in North Wales, are more recent. The British government is planning to spend more than £2 billion building even more prisons.

The continuing presence of prisons in our communities, and the drive to build ever more of them, raise profound questions of democratic accountability and financial sustainabilty.

Later this month, we will be releasing a new interactive guide to every existing prison across England and Wales, the first of a number of resources we will be producing to support local and national initiatives.

Would you consider making a donation, to help us build this movement for change?

A regular donation of £5 per month will make a real difference to our capacity to work with communities across the UK. But we welcome any donation, large or small, regular or one-off.
