Another eye-catching initiative

Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) should be able to hire and fire prison governors and probation chiefs, according to a new report from the right-wing Policy Exchange. The think tank also calls for PCCs to be given powers to increase council tax to pay for local prisons.

The Home Affairs Committee has recently called for greater scrutiny of PCC powers to dismiss chief constables.
