Probation Service

The use and impact of the Community Order and the Suspended Sentence Order

This is the first in a series of reports as part of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies Community Sentences project. The project was initially established to investigate and monitor the new Community Order introduced in the Criminal Justice Act 2003 by providing good quality, objective information about the way it was used and managed during a period of great change following the creation of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS).

Probation Resources, Staffing and Workloads 2001-2008 Revised edition

Our revised version of the report issued in 2008 clarifies the budgetary and staffing crisis that has been confronting the Probation Service.

It was commissioned by Napo, the trade union and professional association for family court and probation staff. Based on interviews with probation staff, reports by probation areas, and an in-depth analysis of financial and workforce statistics, the research portrays the Service struggling to cope and facing budget uncertainties amid moves towards the promotion of competition and potential privatisation.
