'Shameful crime' with more than 66,000 girls at risk

Thursday, 6 February 2014

A coalition of global charities and campaigners are urging Michael Gove to write to the leaders of all primary and secondary schools to highlight the dangers of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Campaigners have called for more accurate data to reflect the number of victims, but it is estimated that 66,000 girls in the UK have been subject to FGM.

The Guardian has launched a new campaign and The Times (subscription only) reports that police must report FGM and other 'honour based' crimes more accurately if the risk of women and children is to be reduced in the future.
