Justice Matters toolkit

Justice matters in Cardiff too!

Earlier this month Helen Mills and Rebecca Roberts of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies visited Cardiff Met University to facilitate our Justice Matters: Creating change workshop.

A group of students and practitioners studying the Youth and Community Practice course took part. The workshop aims to encourage participants to think through short- and long-term solutions to a range of social harms and problems that do not rely on criminal justice interventions.

Louise Cook, Youth and Community Lecturer at Cardiff Met University said;

'No chance of success' for government prison policy

The Ministry of Justice’s plan to reduce the prison population through a reduction in reoffending 'has almost no chance of success', the former New York City corrections and probation director Michael Jacobson writes in today's Guardian.

He also cautions against plans to build new prisons, arguing that 'you simply cannot build your way out' of the problem of prison overcrowding.

Justice Matters workshop and toolkit

As part of the Justice Matters project, we have developed a workshop which aims to encourage participants to think through short- and long-term solutions to a range of social harms and problems that do not rely on criminal justice interventions.

Justice Matters seeks to inspire long-term systemic social change based on the need to rethink the entire configuration of policy and practice so that many current criminal justice responses are not required at all.

New Justice Matters toolkit - building social justice alternatives

On Thursday 17 March 2016, Will McMahon (Deputy Director) and Rebecca Roberts (Senior Policy Associate) will be attending the Howard League conference at the University of Oxford to talk about the Centre's Justice Matters initiative. They will be presenting a prototype workshop toolkit which aims to encourage participants to think through short- and long-term solutions to a range of social harms and problems that do not rely on criminal justice interventions.
