Trelya: Pictures, Words, Actions

Sam Coates

Sam Coates introduces one of many projects children and young people have developed at Trelya

The images are part of a postcard pack called Pictures, Words, Actions. Children and young people were given cameras and asked to take pictures and make comments that reflected their views on their lives.

Children and young people then selected the pictures that best illustrated their lives and exhibited them and produced the Pictures, Words, Actions postcard pack. The project enabled children and young people to express their views and have their voices heard on a number of issues.

The positive issues for children and young people were their friends, family and their sense of community.

Children and young people voiced concern at property damage, vandalism and rubbish.

Several children and young people talked of fights and bullying, they saw this as a bad thing. ‘Lots of children are scared of being beaten up on the estate’. Other issues children and young people felt strongly about included homelessness and drug and alcohol misuse.
