This edition of Prison Service Journal, the first in a two-part series on race in prisons, is edited by guest-edited by Dr Hannah Bennett.
The articles in this edition examine the realities of racial inequality across prison systems in England, Spain, and Italy, and from the perspectives of those most often overlooked.
The aim is not to offer simple solutions but to illuminate uncomfortable truths, highlight resilience, and insist that race cannot remain an afterthought in discussions about imprisonment.
Articles in this edition include:
- Dr Angela Charles on black women in prison
- María del Mar Martin Aragón on women in Spanish prisons
- Finley MacDonald, Cody N Porter and Paul Gavin on young Black men in prison
