Intersecting realities

Exploring the intersectionality of race and gender among women in Spanish prisons

This paper delves into the multifaceted experiences of women in Spanish prisons through an intersectional lens, focusing specifically on the intersectionality of race and gender. This study examines how race intersects with gender, class, and ethnicity to shape the lived experiences of incarcerated women in Spain. By analysing disparities in incarceration rates, sentencing outcomes, access to resources, and experiences of discrimination and violence, this paper sheds light on the unique challenges faced by women of different racial backgrounds within the Spanish criminal justice system. Through a critical examination of the historical and social context of race and gender in Spain, as well as an exploration of the policy implications of these findings, this paper aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the intersectional needs of women in Spanish prisons and advocate for reforms to address these complex and often overlooked issues.
