Show me the money

Friday, 17 January 2014

The Independent reports that the Chief Executive of GEO, the US group behind the Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre near Heathrow, was paid $6 million last year (£3.6m).

A report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) revealed yesterday that an 84 year old Canadian national suffering from dementia was detained at Harmondsworth and later died in hospital, still handcuffed. According to HMIP, the Canadian man’s death was one of a number of 'shocking cases where a sense of humanity was lost'.

Open Democracy has published a useful summary of this and other disturbing cases, as well as giving the rundown on GEO and who runs it.
