Public health statistics could be scrapped to save money

There's a worrying story in today's Guardian claiming that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) might stop publishing official statistics on smoking, drinking, teenage pregnancies and infant mortality to save money. The ONS is already exploring whether to scrap the once a decade census, under its 'Beyond 2011' programme.
