Private prisons. The state they're in

Monday, 14 October 2013

A useful summary of the state of prison privatisation in England and Wales has been published in this morning's Financial Times. Registration (free) required to read the article.

Among the interesting snippets of information is the far lower advertised pay for prison officers in G4S-operated Oakwood prison: around £21,000, compared with £28,000 in the public sector. Which goes some way to explaining why prison inspectors recently found that 'inexperience of the staff was everywhere evident'.
