Met no longer responds to mental health units

Monday, 7 October 2013

The Metropolitan police has ordered officers to no longer respond to calls from mental health units and emergency departments, unless there is a threat to 'life and limb'. According to The Guardian this has raised concerns among staff in psychiatric units, who fear they are being put at risk knowing help is not on the way.

However The Daily Telegraph reports that Sir Peter Fahy, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, said ‘tragedies occur’ because police, who haven’t had the correct training, are called out to incidents involving mental health patients.
