Is that it? Comment on Government response to Justice Committee IPP report

Thursday, 9 February 2023

Centre for Crime and Justice Studies today criticised the delay and obfuscation in the government’s response to the House of Commons Justice Committee report on the Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence.

Speaking today, the Centre’s Director, Richard Garside, said:

At a time when the number of prisoners serving IPP sentences is on the rise, this flippant response to the Justice Committee’s serious and far-reaching report is desperately disappointing.

The government was presented with a golden opportunity to take decisive action to end, once and for all, the dreadful injustices of the IPP sentence. This deeply flawed, superficial response falls a long way short of what is needed.

Many of us had been working to address the injustices of the IPP sentence long before Dominic Raab became Justice Secretary. We will still be here long after he leaves.

The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies will continue to work with and support those campaigning to end this dreadful sentence until every single prisoner serving an IPP sentence is released.
