Stop the 500

Wednesday, 28 July 2021

We have signed a letter calling on the government to scrap the proposed 500 new prison places for women.

The letter, written by Women in Prison, has been signed by 70 organisations and urges the Prisons Minister to re-think Government plans to expand the women's estate.

We don't need more imprisonment for women, which often results in the removal of primary caregivers from homes and the subsequent re-homing of children. According to Women in Prison, the Government needs to invest in Women's Centres instead.
