Coronavirus trends in prisons in England and Wales

Wednesday, 24 June 2020

As part of our work tracking coronavirus in prisons we have been producing infographics showing the main data.

This infographic shows the trends in prisoners and prison staff testing positive for coronavirus in prisons in England and Wales.

Prison staff are being test proactively for coronavirus whereas prisoners are only being tested in hospital on admission with suspected coronavirus. This means the prison and prison staff trends are not directly comparable.

The sharp rise in positive tests of staff in late May is the result of a one-off correction after the Ministry of Justice concluded it had been undercounting positive tests among staff.
