Join us for our March episode of 'Lunch with...' featuring Gloria Morrison and Jan Cunliffe in conversation with Helen Mills.
Jan Cunliffe and Gloria Morrison are the co-founders of JENGbA.
After meeting briefly in 2009 Jan and Gloria made an instant connection and decided almost instantly that there was a need for a national campaign, one that focused solely on joint enterprise. At the time little was known about joint enterprise and since launching we have gained massive support. The campaign gained two select committee inquiries, appeared in numerous documentaries and the highlight of the early years was Jimmy McGovern's award-winning BBC drama 'Common'.
In 2016 campaigners were vindicated when the Supreme Court acknowledged that the law took a wrong turn as far back as 1984, but the victory was bittersweet because now those we support need to pass what is called the Substantial Injustice Test. It is an almost impossible test in which the defendant must prove their innocence even though the law that convicted them was wrongly applied. We say this is almost impossible because only one person has had their conviction quashed.
The new challenge is to have this test abolished by Parliament via the Joint Enterprise Private Members Bill.
