As its starting point, this workshop will focus on the need to look beyond criminal justice to find ways of preventing, reducing and repairing harm. Join us to discuss the available policy and practice solutions to harm that do not rely on punishment and exclusion.

About this event

Justice Matters seeks to inspire long-term systemic social change based on the need to rethink the entire configuration of policy and practice so that many current criminal justice responses are not required at all. This means fundamentally different strategies to criminal justice, not reform of and improvements to the way it works

We have developed the workshop and toolkit as one way of building this strategy for change. There are three elements to the workshop:

  1. Thinking beyond criminal justice: With the assistance of visual aids, participants discuss how to change the frame and move from criminal justice problems to social justice solutions.
  2. Doing things differently: Participants discuss case studies with a focus on special areas of concern or interest and explore social justice solutions to these problems. Examples include (but are not limited to) youth violence, violence against women and problematic drug use.
  3. Making change happen: Consider how we can begin to implement these solutions and identify the risks and opportunities for taking forward the proposals discussed.

The workshop has been conducted with professionals, campaigners, students and representatives of community groups. We've had some great feedback from those who have taken part.
