We have prepared a parliamentary briefing on the IPP sentence, supporting today’s Westminster Hall debate and the upcoming second reading of the Lord Woodley’s Private Members’ Bill.
The parliamentary briefing discusses the background and ongoing impact of the now-abolished Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence. Additionally, it highlights the Justice Committee’s 2022 recommendation of a resentencing exercise of all IPP prisoners, which has recently been rejected by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
The briefing will be relevant to today’s Westminister Hall debate, led by MP Bambos Charalambous, as well as the second reading of Lord Woodley’s IPP Private Members’ Bill, scheduled for 15 November.
For further context, here is a briefing on the IPP published by the House of Commons Library on 22 October.
Update 31 October: the full Westminster Hall debate can now be viewed here and the full transcript is available to read here.
