New initiative on women’s justice

In March we published Breaking out of the Justice Loop, a hard-hitting exposé of why the justice system continues to fail women and girls and what needs to change.

The report, authored by Birth Companions Director Naomi Delap and women's justice expert Liz Hogarth, and co-published with the National Women's Justice Coalition (NWJC), delivered a stark verdict: the criminal justice system, designed by and for men, has been failing women for decades.

We're now working with Naomi Delap, Liz Hogarth and the NWJC to take this analysis forward, with a ground-breaking initiative intended to be a game-changer for women's justice: the Breaking out of the Justice Loop thought-leadership programme.

Working strategically alongside existing organisations, coalitions and networks, the programme is intended to challenge the status quo and champion innovative solutions. Our mission is clear and ambitious: learn from recent history, scrutinise government strategy as it develops, and unleash bold new ideas to achieve genuine systems change.

What sets this initiative apart will be its inclusive, collaborative approach. Rooted in agreed principles and driven by an optimistic vision, we aim to centre the voices that matter most—women's sector organisations, women and girls with lived experience, and justice system professionals. But we're not stopping there. We want to reach beyond traditional boundaries to tap into fresh thinking from psychology, history, economics, philosophy and the arts, among others.

Using a dynamic mix of traditional and creative outputs, we plan to engage both established stakeholders and new audiences, reshaping the narrative around women's justice across multiple platforms.

Our goal? To build an enthusiastic, unified movement with the resilience to weather political turbulence, the power to drive lasting change, and the vision to finally create a justice system that truly works for women.
