Given that there are nearly double the number of people serving community sentences than there are in custody at any one time, it is surprising how little information there is about these sentences and the offenders who serve them.
As a result, the level of political and public debate is often ill informed. This digest intends to address the gap in information and to improve the quality of debate.
It forms part of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies’ Community Sentences project, which was established to investigate and monitor the new Community Order.
