On 18 April, the legal scholar Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, who holds the Lawrence D. Biele Chair of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was arrested by Israeli police and held overnight.
Her release was ordered the following day by the Jerusalem Magistrates Court.
Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian is a member of the International Advisory Board of The British Journal of Criminology. In 2017 she received the Radzinowicz Prize, awarded annually by the Editors of The British Journal of Criminology, for her article, ‘The Occupation of the Senses: The Prosthetic and Aesthetic of State Terror’.
In response to Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s arrest and subsequent release, the senior editors of The British Journal of Criminology made the following statement:
We, the Editors of The British Journal of Criminology, express our grave concern over the arrest of Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian of Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ), who is an esteemed member of our international advisory board.
As the Editors of a scholarly journal in the field of criminology, we affirm the importance of academic freedom, and the principles of an open, democratic society within which scholarly work can best flourish. We also recognise many principled positions, and disagreements, about the conflict in Gaza, and the importance of building understanding and reconciliation. Academics can play an important role in fostering greater knowledge and understanding, both in their professional capacities, and as members of the societies in which they live and work.
We offer our support to Professor Shalhoub-Kervorkian, who is a leading Palestinian feminist scholar and Radzinowicz prize-winning author, and call for the principles of academic freedom, and wider democratic principles, to be respected and upheld.
