Jails: holding pens for foreign ex-offenders

Government data shows that on a single day last month nearly 1,000 foreign nationals were held in prison despite completing their prison sentences, reports The Independent. People who have served prison terms are being held while awaiting deportation. Maurice Wren of the Refugee Council said 'The issue is the deprivation of liberty fo rpeople whose sentences have been served. Some of them had committed offences that were slight in the extreme'.
