Call for more homes, not prisons

Thursday, 24 November 2016

A couple of weeks ago we reported on a visit to the now closed Holloway prison by our Deputy Director, Will McMahon, and London Assembly Member Sian Berry.

Speaking to the Islington Gazette, Will and Sian both said that the Holloway site should be used for much-needed affordable housing and community facilities for local people.

Their call has received support from local resident, Chris Hignett, in a letter to the paper. Referring to the opportunities presented by the closure of Holloway prison and the potential closure of Pentonville prison, also in Islington, he writes:

There is a real danger developers will build more unaffordable housing.

There is room for provide 1,000 council houses and other much needed community resources – even green space.

Given many who end up in prison are homeless and have other social needs, would it not make more sense to build homes instead of yet more failing prisons?

A public meeting in Islington tomorrow night will bring together local residents, community groups, local councillors and the local MP, Jeremy Corbyn, to discuss the possible future uses for the Holloway prison site.

Do come along if you feel you have something to say, or just want to find out more.
