New footage: reflections on holistic defence from Parliament briefing

Earlier this month, the Centre, in collaboration with Commons, brought together parliamentarians and criminal justice experts at the Houses of Parliament.

Speakers discussed how holistic defence could help address pressures in the courts system. We are now sharing new video footage from the event, capturing key reflections from speakers.

The videos feature contributions from Andy Slaughter MP, Juval O. Scott (The Bronx Defenders), Sashy Nathan (Commons), Cassia Rowland (Institute for Government) and Rhona Friedman (Commons) who reflect on the challenges facing the justice system and the potential for new approaches to improve outcomes.

Filmed both inside Parliament and outside following the event, the footage highlights a shared focus on the need to address the underlying drivers of offending alongside legal processes. Speakers discuss how more joined-up, preventative approaches could reduce unnecessary progression through the courts and support more effective use of resources.

The discussion also points to growing interest in holistic defence as part of wider efforts to respond to court delays and system pressures, with insights drawn from both international practice and emerging work in England and Wales.

Watch the videos to hear directly from speakers.
