On Wednesday, 29 April, we will host a panel event bringing together leading experts to discuss joint enterprise.
Joint enterprise has been a subject of concern for over two decades. For some it represents a complex area of legal doctrine, for many it has had profound and life-altering consequences. It continues to be a focus of inquiries, legal reviews, and advocacy efforts, and raise important questions about fairness, accountability, and justice.
Even given the long-running nature of concerns about joint enterprise, it is currently a particularly active moment for examining both the law itself and the practices surrounding its use.
At this event, we will:
- Explore why joint enterprise seems resistant to change
- Examine the current challenges facing those in the system
- Consider the realistic prospects and priorities for future reform
The discussion will bring together a panel offering a wide range of perspectives, from legal expertise to community advocacy.
Speakers are:
- Dame Vera Baird KC (Criminal Cases Review Commission; Women’s Justice Board)
- Felicity Gerry KC (barrister who lead the successful appeal at the Supreme Court in R v Jogee)
- Charlotte Henry (campaigner, Joint Enterprise Not Guilty by Association)
- Dr Patrick Williams (independent researcher and co-author of Dangerous Associations).
The session will be chaired by Helen Mills from the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and will include an opportunity for audience questions and discussion
We are grateful to the Barrow Cadbury Trust for funding this event.
