Entering prison is a significant life event, an abrupt change that may have a substantial and a long-lasting impact on individuals being detained. Transitions through prison can be destabilising especially for those who find adjusting to change difficult. Release from prison is often unexpectedly painful and challenging, resulting in many struggling in the early days following release.
The Settlement Model, which sits within the new HMPPS National Regime Model, is a new way of supporting people in prison during these transitions, through utilising personalised regime activity. This paper will provide a clinical and operational perspective on how we can better support people safely entering, moving through, and leaving prison through meaningful, effective and personalised regimes.
