Immigration detainee 'died in handcuffs'

Thursday, 16 January 2014

Suffering from dementia and judged unfit to be in detention, a man of 84 has died while held in handcuffs at Harmondsworth  reports BBC News.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons  compiled the report which highlighted this and other examples at the centre: a stroke victim in a wheelchair was handcuffed on a journey to hospital, and a dying man remained handcuffed while sedated and undergoing an angioplasty procedure in hospital.

The Prison Reform Trust said Harmondsworth had 'forgotten the basic principles of humanity and decency'.
