Gives 'going dutch' a whole new meaning

Wednesday, 15 January 2014

The Ministry of Justice in Holland wants to introduce a payment of 16 euros for each day, up to a maximum of two years, for those serving a prison sentence. Pieter Vleeming, the head of The Offenders' Association, a Dutch prisoners' rights group , said:

'The deputy minister wants prisoners to pay for two years, that makes a tidy sum of almost €12,000. Now you want to send a prisoner who has no money, who has lost everything while in jail, with (this) debt into the outside world?'.
