Female prisoners will be moved to prisons nearer families

Friday, 25 October 2013

Lord McNally has announced plans for females to be moved to the prison nearest their home and to designate 12 women's prisons in England as 'resettlement prisons', supposedly to enable women to keep in closer contact with their families.

In August the Centre published research highlighting the hurdles women on release from Holloway prison face in finding housing and rebuilding their lives. You can download the research here

Speaking to The Guardian Frances Crook of the Howard League for Penal Reform described the announcement as 'a terrible wasted opportunity'. She added: 'They could have closed the women's prisons altogether and invested the money in women's centres'. She also claimed that the proposals would only affect a small number of women serving sentences.
