Joint Enterprise in the Lords

Monday, 19 June 2023

Concerns about joint enterprise were raised in the House of Lords last week.

In response to a question from Lord Woodley on miscarriages of justice, speaking on behalf of the government, Lord Bellamy acknowledged,

there is some concern the existing case law does operate in a harsh way for certain Black boys and men.

His response confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service will publish data from its pilot monitoring joint enterprise at the end of September this year. The findings of the pilot, he also stated, would be considered by the Law Commission’s review of appeals.

Speaking today, the Centre's Head of Programmes, Helen Mills, said:

Thanks to Lord Woodley for keeping the pressure on the government to address the injustices of joint enterprise. We hope the promised release of monitoring information from the CPS pilots later this year marks a significant step to the meaningful action campaigns groups have been called for for years.
