Wednesday, 1 December 2021

We've compiled a handy list of references from today's webinar, 'Last month in criminal justice' for viewers.

In this episode, Richard was joined by Charlie Weinberg (Safe Ground), Pavan Dhaliwal (Revolving Doors Agency) and former prison officer and prison governor Ian Acheson. The discussion covered a number of issues dominating criminal justice in November, including:

  • Liverpool women’s hospital bombing
  • Imprisonment of nine Insulate Britain protestors
  • Joint inspection report into mental health in criminal justice
  • House of Commons Justice Committee Inquiry into the Imprisonment for Public Protection sentence(IPP)
  • The appearance of the Justice Secretary, Dominic Raab, before the Justice Committee
  • House of Lords debates on short sentences
  • What should be in the forthcoming prisons White Paper

You can watch the full video here and we've provided a handy guide to publications, committee hearings, clips and expertise on these issues below.

1. Liverpool women's hospital bombing

Richard mentioned Pragna Patel's article on Prevent in Feminist Dissent which you can read here

Charlie Weinberg recommended that if we want to understand risk and criminal justice with a basis in evidence, we should look to Joan Smith and Professor Sylvia Walby.

Ian mentioned a Crest Advisory report on countering extremism.

2. Imprisonment of Insulate Britain protesters

Watch the video of a cafe owner's response to Insulate Britain protesters.

3. Joint inspection report into mental health in criminal justice

The latest joint inspection report referred to can be accessed here, and find out more about the Justice Committee inquiry into mental health in prisons.

The panel also discussed the Bradley Report (2009) and Reed Review (1993), both historic reviews into mental health in criminal justice.

4. Justice Comittee IPP hearing

Ian mentioned high rates of recall amongst those with IPP sentences. It remained unclear why this was. This was something UNGRIPP campaigner, Donna Mooney spoke about at our previous episode. Listen to Donna discuss the often minor reasons for recall.

5. Justice Committee: Dominic Raab's thoughts on parole

This week, Dominic Raab appeared before the Justice Committee for the first time as Lord Chancellor. Watch what he had to say about parole, a topic our panelists discussed, below.
