About the conference
This is the third annual UK Justice Policy Review event.
Last year’s conference – Criminal Justice since 2015 – examined criminal justice developments between the 2015 General Election and the Brexit referendum. This year’s conference picks up the story, looking at developments between the Brexit vote of June 2016 and the 2017 General Election.
It will look at criminal justice developments across the three UK criminal justice jurisdictions of England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Programme
During the course of the day the conference will consider a number of related issues:
- The main criminal justice developments across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The politics of law and order across the UK. The big developments, or the big challenges, to look out for.
- The challenge of achieving small, but important, victories. From stop and search to deaths in custody, from joint enterprise convictions to the criminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland, why does it often appear so difficult to sustain meaningful progress in key policy areas?
- The challenge of achieving lasting and ambitious reform. From high prison populations to drug law reform; from genuinely accountable policing to rethinking our notions of justice, the conference will explore some of the big justice questions of our day.
- The big data challenge. The conference will be showcasing some of the most promising new data-driven approaches to the justice system and the problem of crime and victimisation.
The ideas and experiences of the audience will be as important as those of the expert panellists we have convened, with opportunities for audience participation and engagement throughout the course of the day.
