The Use of the Community Order and Suspended Sentence Order for Young Adult Offenders

On 18th June 2007 as part of our community sentences project we published 'The Use of the Community Order and Suspended Sentence Order for Young Adult Offenders' by Stephen Stanley, former head of research at London Probation Service.

The report is one in a series of publications looking at the how the sentences are being used for specific groups of offenders. The report, which examines the use of the new Community Order and Suspended Sentence Order for adults aged between 18 and 24 says that the orders need to be more responsive to the needs of young adults. It highlights that there is a heavy reliance on unpaid work programmes and much less use of education, training and employment programmes and substance misuse programmes despite the fact that young adults have distinct needs in these areas.
