Sue Pearce has been counselling with HMP Low Newton for over four years as part of her work at the Tyneside Rape Crisis Centre. She works with women offenders who have experienced sexual abuse at some point in their lives. It is a unique service which Sue Pearce believes should be available to women offenders across the country. She has worked very hard to create a safe atmosphere where women offenders can explore painful feelings at their own pace in a bid to help them move on with their lives. Creating an atmosphere that allows for this process to take place within a prison is very challenging indeed, but something that Sue Pearce has demonstrated to not be impossible.

Despite not having a regular room to counsel women, she has not let that stop her from offering her service to this vulnerable client group. Over time she has also built good relations with the staff who often come to her for advice. Sue has a deep understanding of the situation that these women find themselves in and recognises that trust does not come easy for this group, she has therefore dedicated a lot of her time to ensure that she gives the women time to trust her and that she will not let them down, which has so often been the case in the past.
