Are you are a practitioner working with those who have been sanctioned by the criminal justice system?
Do you want to help improve human rights and prison condition in the UK and across Europe?

The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies is holding a one day event at HMP Grendon. The day will bring together practitioners, voluntary sector workers and residents and their families to discuss best practice in prisons and what the highest common standards of prison conditions across European Union might be.

The event is being organised as part of our contribution to the European Prison Observatory, a pan-European Union project that is investigating and comparing prison conditions, sharing better practice and promoting respect for human rights in prisons management across the European Union.

Structure of the day

The day’s discussions will be kicked off by residents and their families. We also want to have practitioner experience present, as your role forms an essential part of the criminal justice experience for prisoners.

There will be three workshops:

  • The first will focus on the views of and feedback from Grendon residents and their family and friends.
  • The second will seek the views of those delivering services in prison - such as health, education and training provision.
  • The third workshop will focus on the views of prison administrative staff and officers.

Helping to shape European guidelines

The results of the day will be combined with the results of similar events that will be taking place in the seven other partner countries (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Latvia, Poland and Greece). These will be presented in the shape of guidelines and recommendations to policy makers and European legislators.

This is your opportunity to bring your practice experience to bear on the development of better European human rights standards for those incarcerated across the Union. If you would like to register for this event please do so by clicking on the 'Register Now' button to the right or at the bottom of this page.
