Report on racist Joint Enterprise launched in Birmingham

Friday, 29 April 2016

The findings of our report, which tracks some of the racist police and court practices that lead to the over-representation of young black men in the criminal justice system, were presented at a community event in Birmingham on 28 April. The findings were presented by report authors Becky Clarke and Patrick Williams of Manchester Metropolitan University.

The report – Dangerous associations – tracks the complex process of criminalisation through which black and minority ethnic people are unfairly identified by the police as members of dangerous gangs. This apparent ‘gang’ affiliation’ is used to secure convictions, under joint enterprise provisions, for offences they have not committed.

The launch follows two very successful events in London earlier in the year.
