About this event

How can we enhance understanding of prison life?  And what does it mean to undertake research in highly restricted, secretive and often oppressive institutions?

These are two central issues considered in The Palgrave Handbook of Prison Ethnography – a new book on the complexities of conducting ethnography inside prisons, which will receive its UK launch at this event.

Themes covered

  • What role can prison research, and ethnography in particular, play in challenging the use of the prison, both within the UK and globally?
  • Can prison ethnography assist in reframing the way prisoners are portrayed in policy, practice and in popular media?
  • What are the current challenges of prison ethnography and research?
  • What does a researcher's exposure to the inner life of prisons contribute to understanding the prison?

Speakers to include

The three editors of The Palgrave Handbook of Prison Ethnography:

  • Dr Deborah Drake
  • Dr Rod Earle
  • Dr Jennifer Sloan

The co-director of the Harm, Evidence and Research Collaborative at The Open University, Dr Victoria Cooper.
