This seminar will discuss the findings of two reports on human rights in prisons in the European Union and ask how the United Kingdom compares with European partners.

About this event

The seminar offers a first opportunity to discuss and debate the findings of the European Prison Observatory, an eight country European Union partnership. The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies is responsible for the United Kingdom-related work of this partnership.

Speakers

This seminar will focus on two presentations:

  • Marie Crétenot of the International Prison Observatory (France) will introduce the UK launch of a new eight country report into the most positive examples of human rights practice in the European Union: From national practices to European guidelines: interesting initiatives in prisons management. The report contains examples of positive and interesting initiatives that support the development of a human rights agenda in prisons across the European Union. It also includes ten suggested guidelines for improving human rights across the Union.
  • Dr. Roger Grimshaw will present a profile of the National Preventive Mechanism in the UK, dealing with its constitution, composition, accountability, financing and staffing and examining its recent work.
