This event on Wednesday 19th November 2014 will invite discussion of the challenges and opportunities for pursuing 'upstream' activities in the prevention of violence against women and girls.

On Wednesday 19th November 2014, we will be hosting a roundtable event to consider the existing knowledge about interventions and policies that prevent violence against women. The purpose of the roundtable is to inform our work going forward and identify opportunities for collaborations and partnerships.

As part of our broader Justice Matters initiative, we are committed to identifying ways to build policies and practice to reduce harm. We hope to work with others to foster lasting and long term change for violence prevention strategies that operate outside of the criminal justice system.

At the roundtable we will invite participants to consider the following questions:

  1. What does the evidence tell us about primary prevention policies?
  2. What are the challenges and opportunities for policies that go beyond criminal justice and legal interventions?
  3. How do we challenge structural inequality and eradicate punishment and control in women's lives?

Earlier this year we launched a call to action to ‘Empower women, resist injustice and transform lives’:

'The harms women face are widespread yet consistently ignored. Many criminal justice interventions and support services serve to replicate and reinforce unequal gender relations rather than tackle the root causes of harm... We are calling on others to work with us to challenge structural inequality and eradicate punishment and control in women's lives.'

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified violence as a ‘public health issue’ and published strategy documents that identify 'upstream' interventions. You can read more about this in a comment piece published on our website here
