Poverty and Disadvantage among prisoners families

Poverty among prisoners' families is widespread, bringing particular social and emotional consequences for the vulnerable and dependent, but their experiences have been little researched. A better understanding of their problems, and ways of addressing them, may emerge from reflecting on their stories and interpretations. The support of the is making such research possible.

A diverse group of family members have been interviewed at visiting centres in three prisons as well as through contacts with organisations giving assistance to families. Information about relevant statutory and voluntary schemes with anti-poverty objectives has been collected, and an economic evaluation examining the costs and other economic implications of schemes has been undertaken. A published report is due by autumn 2006.
