Prime Minister's speech on law and order (23/06/06)
Commenting on the Prime Minister's speech, the Acting Director of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, Richard Garside, says:
'There is no doubting the Prime Minister's sincerity in believing that the manifold crime problems this country faces can be solved by expanding ever more the grip of the criminal justice system. But he is sincerely mistaken.
'What is needed is an honest discussion with the public about what the criminal justice system cannot achieve, and an openness to thinking creatively across a much broader policy terrain than that occupied by the police, the courts and the prisons.'
