CCJS comment on crime figures (19/07/06)
Commenting on the annual crime figures, Richard Garside, Acting Director of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King's College London said:
'The annual ritual of finding something to be frightened of is getting in the way of any serious debate about crime, its scale and scope, its causes and solutions.
`The police crime figures tell us what the police record, not what is going on in the real world. The British Crime Survey tells us much that is important, but underestimates significantly some of the most serious and unpleasant of crimes.
`A fundamental rethink of the over-reliance on partial statistical measures, and of the assumption that criminal justice approaches can address what in reality are deeply entrenched social and economic problems, would greatly assist an informed public debate.' For further information contact:
