No smoking in prisons from 2015

Friday, 20 September 2013

Plans are ahead for prisoners who will no longer be able to smoke cigarettes in their cells. Inmates will be offered nicotine patches to cope with withdrawal symptoms.

Amid fears that this could lead to rioting in prisons, Andrew Neilson from the Howard League said: 'Prisons are going through unprecedented budget cuts, prison resources, staff resources have been cut, there may well be good intentions behind this policy proposal, but it will undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on jails which are already pretty stretched.'
