May wrong to treat citizenship as a privilege to be removed

Thursday, 14 November 2013

Matthew Gibney, reader in Politics and Forced Migration at the University of Oxford, argues against Home Secretary Theresa May’s plans to strip citizenship from suspected terror suspects leaving them stateless, an extension on the current powers which allow the stripping of British citizenship from those who have dual citizenship.

Gibney argues in a comment piece for The Guardian that it is a cruel and unusual punishment which May has already used on 16 Britons in her first 30 months in office and many of whom had never been charged in a British court with a criminal offence.
