Justice Matters in Lambeth

Thursday, 21 November 2013

As part of the Centre's Justice Matters inititative, we are welcoming contributions for our website on downsizing criminal justice and rebuilding policy and practice alternatives.

Ed Davie, Lambeth Labour Councillor, submitted a piece on Lambeth's mental health commission for its African and Caribbean residents.

In Lambeth the black population is 21 per cent, but 65 per cent on forensic secure wards are from African and Caribbean communities. This, along with the recent deaths of local black mental health service users in police custody spurred Lambeth’s health and adult social care scrutiny committee to work to identify opportunties to improve practice in order to find better ways to prevent poor mental health and give a better experience of care.
