Prime Minister's plans to extend summary powers (12/06/06)
Commenting on the Prime Ministers plans to extend the use of summary powers, the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies Acting Director, Richard Garside, says:
'Unless plans to expand the use of summary justice are grounded in an honest acknowledgement of what criminal justice approaches cannot do, and what principles are worth defending, you end up going down the path of ever more coercive and dubious solutions.
'In their more candid moments Mr Blair and his allies acknowledge that the problems they are dealing with have deep social and economic causes. So you have to ask why they think that they will solve them by giving the police and other agencies ever bigger sticks with which to hit perceived wrong-doers.'
