A rare opportunity to hear from key experts in the field on the criminal justice challenges facing an incoming government following the 2015 General Election.

Since 2010, the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies has been tracking criminal justice developments across the United Kingdom. Its annual report - UK Justice Policy Review - has become required reading for anyone wanting to get an overview of criminal justice developments across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This event is one of a number that are being organised in the run up to the 2015 General Election to debate recent criminal justice developments and identify the key challenges for an incoming government in 2015.

  • What are the criminal justice challenges facing an incoming government following the 2015 General Election?
  • How have previous governments sought to reform and improve the operations of the various criminal justice agencies?
  • What lessons does the past hold for the future?

These are the questions that David Faulkner, former senior Home Office civil servant, will be discussing with a panel of experts including:

  • Frances Crook, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform.
  • Harry Fletcher, Director of Digital-Trust and former Assistant General Secretary of Napo.
  • Tim Newburn, Professor of Criminology and Social Policy at the London School of Economics
  • Richard Garside, Director of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies.

Drawing on a depth of experience spanning three decades as a Home Office civil servant, as well as his more recent work as a researcher at the University of Oxford, David Faulkner will offer a rare insight into the inner workings of Whitehall, highlighting policy successes and failures and discussing what the future may hold for criminal justice reform.

David will draw on his new book, Servant of the Crown, which gives an insider account of how issues of the day have been handled and policies formed under successive Home Secretaries and other senior politicians. Copies of David's book will be available at the event with a 25% discount.
